The difference is alarmingly clear. Like a hefty. However, Shanley seems torn between digging deeply into the souls of his four dogs — a producer, a writer and two scrapping actresses — and letting them get afew yuks. By the end, when one emerges as the winner, nothing has changed for any of them. Kasdan and producer Gilbert Cates have cast it with a passel of film stars — Martin Short, Brendan Fraser, Parker Posey and Elizabeth Perkins — all of whom are, if not perfect, very funny. Perkins brings the most life to the production as Collette, the washed-up ingenue who is fighting to keep scribe Victor Fraser from cutting her dwindling part. In her uniquely deadpan monotone, Perkins finds luscious deliveries.
It begs for permanence so that one can return and savor its delights. Alas, this sharp, biting, witty, and funny gem is theater, not a movie, so go see it live. Be alert to all the clever funny nuances director Julie Beckman unearths in the script. Who are the four dogs, what are they fighting for and what are they fighting over? Shanley uses the first act to let us know in two scenes, each with two of the characters. Bradley is not buying it. Brenda, as only a supporting actress in the script, wants her role boosted.
